...to the rest of your life...
It was 02.30 in New London, early by anyone's standards, when Kathy's mobile 'phone rang out from the bedside table.
Reaching over still half asleep, her fingers dipped into the glass of water she kept there reminding her of the tricks played out at sleep over parties as a child - the bathroom instantly became a priority destination for her...
Reaching the 'phone in the darkness, she answered it with a subdued and very tired;
"Hello..."
"Hi, is that Kathy Monroe...?
"Yes - who is this..?"
"Sorry, this is Steven Bradbury from Ancestral File .com over in Los Angeles; I have some exciting news for you..."
"Really, at 02.30 in the morning, couldn't it wait...?"
"We thought you should know, as soon as we found out, we just thought you'd like to know as soon as possible..."
"Know what...?"
"That you are actually Kathy Facultas, not Kathy Monroe..."
"What is this, are you some kind of stalker...?"
"No, really - you are Kathy Facultas. The daughter of Robert and Helen Facultas, members of the original Royal Family of Prussia..."
"What, why are you telling me this now, who are you exactly..."
"You have an inheritance and a title. Your family heritage is one of achievement, excellence and wealth, there are great expectations placed upon you and responsibilities you have - we'd like you to come to a meeting in a few weeks time to sort out all the paperwork - I will email you later today..."
Kathy felt confused, tired and disoriented - the strangers voice so early in the morning was unexpected and somewhat bizarre...
The phone went dead - and immediately the bathroom became of urgent importance now.
Yawning and walking back into the bedroom, Kathy started to think about the telephone call - she looked at her 'phone but the last number to call was from a withheld number..
Had she been dreaming...?
At 34 years of age, living in suburban Essex, working in the Building Supplies company that she joined when she left school - life seemed pretty good. She was married with 5 year old twins and a home and friends that she liked...
Was she really part of a Royal family - she had been adopted as a baby so it was just possible that she was who Steven Bradbury said she was...
She climbed into bed and slowly drifted off to sleep...
The alarm went at 06.30 and Kathy woke with a start - a night of broken sleep didn't serve her well..
Up, showered, breakfasted, and youngsters to school, Kathy started her commute to the office - almost forgetting about the 'phone call she had received...
Royalty indeed, inheritance, expectations and heritage - and here she was working on reception for 15 years...
As she thought about the 'phone call, and the email she would get and the meeting she would attend - she felt herself physically get a little taller. Her head raised and she felt more confident and self aware - she had always "knew" that she was destined for great things and this just served to validate her point...
As she arrived at work she found that it no longer interested her - being a Royal surely meant that she should be drinking champagne not tea out of a mug.
Over the coming weeks she dressed better, found a new job in the city, booked a fabulous family holiday and bought a new car. She started to mix with high flyers, and was so convinced that she was destined for greatness that within 6 months she had started her own company and within 2 years was drinking champagne in Monaco with her family on their yacht...
Strange thing was that the Email never arrived - in fact Kathy convinced herself that the whole conversation that night was just a dream.
However, simply choosing to acknowledge a different possibility, enabled her to create a different reality...
