What the CEO really means when they say...

The language of Business is designed to build a rich and rosy picture that doesn't upset the shareholders...
CEO's, Directors and Business Owners use a range of phrases that are generally accepted, but which on closer scrutiny actually mean something quite different than was intended...
So, here is a short list of the top 10 phrases used in business - and the translation into everyday language for the rest of us...
  1. We are facing challenging trading conditions...
we have no idea what we are doing but we are going to hope for the best...
  2. The team is laser focussed on the strategy...
the team only have one idea, so we are going to go with it and ignore all advice and creativity...
  3. Introduction of performance enhancing incentives...
everyone will be fired unless they start to work longer hours for less pay...
  4. We need to think outside the Box...
our existing strategy sucks, so we have to do something crazy and insane in the hope that it works...
  5. Our strategy is one of inclusivity, diversity and openness...
if you are odd, strange or unusual in any way, we will grudgingly tolerate your idiosyncrasies in the hope you resign...
  6. We have to do more with less...
the Directors want a pay rise and the shareholders want a dividend, so you lot have to work harder...
  7. We remain optimistic for the future revenue streams...
we haven't actually sold anything yet, but things can only get better, or else we are all out of a job...
  8. The CEO has the full support of the Board...
we are interviewing new candidates now, but until we find a good one we are stuck with this idiot...
  9. My door is always open to feedback from our Associates...
any bitching and moaning will result in that person being vilified and fired as quickly as possible...
  10. We are making tactical adjustments to strategic implementation...
our plan isn't working so we are going to panic and drop our prices in the hope someone buys something...
The names have been omitted to protect the guilty...
So the next time you listen to someone in a fine suit tell you that;
their continued and unrelenting focus is on sustainability, profitability and shareholder value generation in an inclusive paradigm of mutual respect and cohesive values...
You know that they actually mean something else...

Have a great week..
