Anyone for Mediocrity...?
The picture of the Results that professionals achieve can generally be plotted on a Bell Curve. Applies to Sales, Recognition, Skills etc...
As you can see if we plot the Results that are achieved in any sector against the number of people achieving them a recognised pattern emerges.
The Graph can be split into three key areas...
Zone 1 - this is known as the Bloody Awful Zone and is to be avoided. Here live the stragglers, the hopeful and the underachievers.
Their main function is to make those in Zone 2 feel relatively successful.
Zone 2 - Mediocrity. if we were being kind here we would call this Zone "average" or "median". In reality this is where most people and businesses actually sit - in comfortable Mediocrity. This is the Status Quo that defines the sector.
They tolerate this for two main reasons;
- The industry "norms" suggest that this is about as good as it gets in this business and they all collude with each other at conference or on Face Book and congratulate each other for continually achieving nothing of note.
- It's comfortable here. Everyone likes you because you make others feel as if they are doing OK too; you don't stand out or make them feel jealous of you getting better results than they have...
Zone 3 - Rockstar.These are the ones that break the rules, become famous, make more money and success or make a greater contribution.
They are few in number and may be ridiculed by the Mediocre and the Bloody Awful; success leaves a shadow in which those less worthy feel the chill of disappointment and jealousy. These are the Rockstars that Beat Up the Status Quo; they show what is possible and challenge the assumptions of an entire sector.
Everyone has the opportunity to achieve Rock Star status - if you have the ability, you also have a responsibility to yourself and those around you. By shining bright you give others permission to do the same, you will define yourself in your sector and make better things possible for everyone.
Becoming a Rock Star means you will have to be remarkable, be different, charge more, deliver more, write books, be on TV, become well known and start wearing leather trousers; well perhaps not the leather.
To get started you simply have to decide to be one and not tolerate Mediocrity anymore, decide that just because others are doing it, you don't have to; become the maverick, dare to challenge the Status Quo, work your little socks off and take the risk of becoming truly amazing
You may not be popular - but we are not in the business of creating Pop Stars, we are in the business of creating Rock Stars...

Just curious: if we were all Rockstars, how would the chart change?
ReplyDeleteAnd: doesn't it take the masses of mediocre businesses in order to differentiate a Rock Star? I mean, without the comparison to the norm, how can anybody be the exception?

Does it really have to be that way? Are the business in the middle really "less worthy"? If a business offers something valuable, we still get value from all those mediocre businesses. Isn't that what counts? Joseann

DeleteI wish everybody could be Rockstars - but they are not. Middle Businesses are not less worthy but we need Leaders in any sector to raise the standards for the rest..
