On 23rd January 1961 two Mk 39 Mod 2 Hydrogen Bombs, each being 260 times more powerful than the device dropped on Hiroshima, were "accidentally" dropped from a B-52G Bomber whilst flying over Goldsboro, North Carolina in the USA..
If one of these bombs had exploded it would have yielded 3.8 Megatons and have a 100% kill zone of approximately 1000 sq miles. To be clear, this single bomb was more powerful than the combined yield of all munitions, TNT, Gunpowder and conventional Bombs ever used in the history of the world - including the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki...
The one Bomb fell to earth and simply hit the ground - burying itself 200 ft into the ground. It was impossible to get it out so it was simply covered with concrete. The other one, however, deployed it's parachute and three of the four arming mechanisms activated; it simply needed a single low voltage switch to be activated to detonate the bomb.
Fortunately this very low-tech device failed and the bomb "safely" parachuted to the ground and was recovered - see picture...
This information was "supressed" by the US Military until under the freedom of information act, journalist Eric Schlosser obtained the declasssified 1969 dossier regarding the incident and published the contents in his 2013 Book - Command & Control.
Now...
That evening the people of Greensboro, and everyone else that lived with the 1000 sq mile "kill zone", had no idea that in a few hours they would all be within a whisker of instant death. So were the good people of North Carolina worried about this eventuality...?
Of course not, they were still celebrating JFK being sworn in as President on Saturday the 21st January, or discussing the Santa Maria Hijacking that happened earlier in the day. They were more likely to be worrying about their jobs, relationships and money, than the risk of being vapourised in a nuclear fireball...
Their worries and fears on that day would have been based on the news they had available to them - we only worry about that which we have information; and are blessed with the additional gifts of prevarication and exasperation to make things worse.
We may Fear that about which we know nothing, but worry tends to be based more on tangible evidence - Fear may be irrational, but Worry is somehow more logical.
Worrying is just Praying for what you don't want...
In Business and in Life, it is always the unexpected that trips us up or causes us the greatest challenges and frustrations - and yet it is rarely these catastrophic occurrences and the associated consequences, that are the focus of our worrying.
So the lesson...?
Whatever you are worrying about - it is likely to be largely irrelevant - so Stop It...!
Worry holds us back, it can be debilitating - I remember my Mom used to tell me that nothing is ever as bad as we worry it will be; and she is right...
If you really want to worry about something, consider that the Tsar Nuclear Bomb built by the Russians in the cold war has a yield of 60 Megatons; or 15 times the power of the Mk 39 Bombs described above - these beauties have a "kill zone" of around 11,000 sq miles and would just about wipe out the Netherlands in one go...
That was in 1961 too - imagine what weapons are available now that we could worry about if we actually knew about them; don't start me off on Area 51...
People who worry live in the negative future they create in their minds, people with anxiety are living in the past and allowing their history to unfortunately repeat itself..
We need to live in the present - the here and now; this is where love, purpose and passion all flourish. Tomorrow is promised to no one, today is a gift - that is why it is called the present.
Stop worrying and start living...
